Corporate Branding. (GOOD?)

November 24th, 2009 by Mateo

Everywhere I look Red Bull is sponsoring an event that works to promote music and culture. Educating people that previously may have never had the exposure to what they’re seeing or hearing, while at the same time creating a platform for artists to promote their work. I know deep down Red Bull like any other cola brand, is a marketing machine with its number one goal being to make the fat stacks, but the effort + dedication its team put into promoting stuff I enjoy is enough for me to lend my support.

Note: This was not written with a public health perspective. I do not condone drinking more than a few of cans of this stuff a week.

Shout ooot to Nina, I’ve discovered a few different artists through RBMA.

Tiesto’s Kaleidoscope World Tour at Pacific Coliseum, Vancouver

November 17th, 2009 by Melissa Dex Guzman

Dutch DJ extraordinaire Tiesto played this past Saturday at the Pacific Coliseum and yours truly was there for the showdown. Down to the point, I don’t think I could have asked for more… I had fun? Initially, I thought it would be “funny” to go down to the show, but what it came down to was just “fun”. Joke’s always on me, right?

My relationship with electronic music can be traced back to when I was 10 years old watching documentaries on the Prodigy and the UK rave scene. I wanted to be a part of the dance scene so bad but not only was I 10 and well-underaged but the scene seemed to have only existed in Europe. Over a decade later, here I am in my twenties, still missing out on the rave scene… although according to some (re: most), that was a good thing.

Confession: Tiesto is my first “trance” show.

Everyone Loves Good GOSSIP

November 12th, 2009 by Stephanie Jhala

The Cobbles - 39 copy

Have you heard? I heard it from Freddie who heard it from his grandma’s cleaning lady, the one with the lazy eye, who heard it from her brother’s dog’s nutritionist, yes his dog has a nutritionist, who heard it from his boyfriend’s taro card reader, the gypsy lady with bad breath, who heard it from a random bearded man in skinny skinny jeans on the corner of Granville and Smithe Street outside the Commodore Ballroom. Like I said, everyone loves good gossip.

For those of you who don’t know the band Gossip, you better get with the program because they are a force to be reckoned with.

Riva Starr – I Was Drunk + Black Cat/White Cat

November 10th, 2009 by Mateo

First caught sight of this vid from my homey DJ Neoteric and have been patiently waiting for the mp3s release. You can now cop it @ Beatport. House music is something else now eh?

PS: Speaking of Neoteric. Keep it locked here for a bit of a feature on his + Matty Cee’s White Light Mixes project. Definitely something you have to listen to.

The Greatest Boy Alive?

November 6th, 2009 by Mateo

The Whitest Boy Alive is my favorite band. My love for them started when I heard a remix of one of their songs by one of my favorite French house producers, Fred Falke. After hearing this remix I went on a rampage trying to find out all I could about the band. Who are they? Where are they from? Where’s the buzz? Usually any artist Mr. Falke remixes has a huge cult following, but there was really nothing to be found on these dudes. Their website was, and still is pretty minimal, I couldn’t find any reviews of their album, and the only jam I could find was the previously mentioned remix. It was only a matter of time though until the Blogosphere would put Justice’s on the back burner and embrace a new sound.

Matéo – Timing is Everything (Fall 2009 mix)

October 28th, 2009 by Mateo

THECOBBLES

Its been about a month an a half since we released C’est Tres Bon and I can’t even begin to describe how thankful I am for the support. I think we’ve reached around 500 downloads and I’ve managed to give out about 300 hard copies. Thanks to the Mix + The party that accompanied it, I’ve managed to meet some great people that have shown me nothing but love. Special Thanks to Anthony Needle Kineval who has brought me in a few times to play at his Friday night, which coincidentally I always wanted to play since its days at Tokyo Lounge(RIP). If you’re in Vancouver and want a gangster free, dance like its nobody’s bidnezz kinda vibe, then look no further than Get Up Get Down Fridays @ Shine in Gastown.
