Lets celebrate bro

November 26th, 2009 by Mateo

When a friend of mine told me we would be celebrating his Birthday on top of a mountain, I thought instantly: log home, bear skin rug, and collecting fire wood. I was so wrong.

This weekend 20 of my friends and I, all of whom I have kept close since high school will be staying at the state of the art Crescendo Lodge on top of Big White, BC. We are bringing up 4 turntables, enough alcohol to start a riot, 3 boxes of boneless chicken, and some ridiculous Costco size veggie platters. I’m excited for a comfortable weekend in the cold. Its too often I go through winter freezing my ass of with nothing better to do than look forward to my next sunny getaway. I find myself drinking way too much eggnog which leads to some irritable bowels, so I end up staying home playing COD, way too embarrassed to have to deal with a public poop mishap. Anyways, this isn’t  livejournal so I’ll leave you with some photos of said destination rather than describe my stinky Winter issues.

I Can’t Stand the Rain

November 26th, 2009 by Adam Mark

Before I start, I’d just like to wish all our American readers a Happy Thanksgiving! There’s nothing more enjoyable than a home cooked meal shared with friends and family, followed by an all out war for shipping deals =) But moving forward…

Today’s been a bit of a breather from what seemed to be the everlasting sorrow of God. I guess it’s to be expected being in Vancouver, but it doesn’t mean that we have to like it. I’m not saying that I don’t enjoy the occasional heavenly cleanse, I mean some of my fondest memories are of rainy days sitting in Gastown enjoying some of the city’s finest soup, but days upon days can even begin to take it’s toll on veteran locals.

But that’s not even the worst of it, I can stand getting wet, I can stand the lack of color….. but I can’t stand people who use umbrellas undercover and think they have the right-of-way.

Corporate Branding. (GOOD?)

November 24th, 2009 by Mateo

Everywhere I look Red Bull is sponsoring an event that works to promote music and culture. Educating people that previously may have never had the exposure to what they’re seeing or hearing, while at the same time creating a platform for artists to promote their work. I know deep down Red Bull like any other cola brand, is a marketing machine with its number one goal being to make the fat stacks, but the effort + dedication its team put into promoting stuff I enjoy is enough for me to lend my support.

Note: This was not written with a public health perspective. I do not condone drinking more than a few of cans of this stuff a week.

Shout ooot to Nina, I’ve discovered a few different artists through RBMA.

ChasingMOOD1

So a Chinaman, an Italian and a priest walk into… Wait wrong post, but remove the priest and turn that Ital into an Italian/Portuguese halfbreed and you’ve got the odd couple that makes up Chasing Mood: a new reality series that follows Vancouverites Curtis Lum and Brendon Bertolini on their quest to make it big.

Get more thoughts + trailer after the jump.

Z-TRIP: Interviewed!

October 5th, 2009 by Terence Tso

vimeo Direkt

What’s up my good cobbled people? I realize I’ve technically been a “writer” for the cobbles for the over a month now with nary a peep. I’ll just blame getting hitched during the month of Sept and be done with it. Anyway, I’m here now and I figured this would be a fitting first post.

A couple weeks ago, with barely a week’s worth of promotion, the Smirnoff Experience party series descended on an unsuspecting Vancouver Thursday at the Rocky Mountaineer Station with America’s #1 DJ emblazoned as the headliner.  Z-TRIP – fresh off his coronation in Las Vegas – proceeded to destroy the capacity crowd with his pioneering, mind-bending, multi-genre’d sound and impeccable skill behind the decks.

Before the bloodletting that night, I had what I would consider a career highlight being able to interview the man I’ve looked up to as one of my biggest influences in the scene.  DJs take note! The interview focused primarily on his insights to the art, direction and evolution of DJing past, present, and future, and managed to do it all without ever using the word “mashup” once…

They’re Just Shoes..

September 30th, 2009 by Adam Mark

kicks

I’ve taken the train throughout most of my career and as such have become what some would call overly meticulous. It started one Summer where it was more of a game, trying to figure out where the trains would stop so I could have first access to the doors (both 2 and 4 car trains), observing how long it took for a new train to come after one had left and testing out the best spots within the cars for easy access and less hassle when entering/exiting.

It eventually evolved into me becoming a self appointed train expert. I mean I didn’t feel as if I owned them or anything, but I felt I had a clear advantage over the rest of the commuters, seeing as I had my all important “system”.

The Monday Morning Recap | Johnny’s Birthday

September 28th, 2009 by Adam Mark

cobbs

Last week looked more like a city morgue than a buzzing writing group. While most of us were dealing with the plague, Mateo was off traveling the world and enjoying the sun (he’ll tell you all about it later), Terence was on a much needed holiday and Steph was fighting off all the semi-quasi Jonas brothers looking for a lesson. As such, be on the lookout for things to get ramped up here as we have an exclusive DJ Z-Trip interview on the way along with new fashion columns and a food review or two.

This weekend brought many smiles upon Canadian faces as many a hockey pool started, but more importantly is was one of our closest friend’s birthday.
