I Can’t Stand the Rain

November 26th, 2009 by Adam Mark

Before I start, I’d just like to wish all our American readers a Happy Thanksgiving! There’s nothing more enjoyable than a home cooked meal shared with friends and family, followed by an all out war for shipping deals =) But moving forward…

Today’s been a bit of a breather from what seemed to be the everlasting sorrow of God. I guess it’s to be expected being in Vancouver, but it doesn’t mean that we have to like it. I’m not saying that I don’t enjoy the occasional heavenly cleanse, I mean some of my fondest memories are of rainy days sitting in Gastown enjoying some of the city’s finest soup, but days upon days can even begin to take it’s toll on veteran locals.

But that’s not even the worst of it, I can stand getting wet, I can stand the lack of color….. but I can’t stand people who use umbrellas undercover and think they have the right-of-way.

So a Chinaman, an Italian and a priest walk into… Wait wrong post, but remove the priest and turn that Ital into an Italian/Portuguese halfbreed and you’ve got the odd couple that makes up Chasing Mood: a new reality series that follows Vancouverites Curtis Lum and Brendon Bertolini on their quest to make it big.

They’re Just Shoes..

September 30th, 2009 by Adam Mark

I’ve taken the train throughout most of my career and as such have become what some would call overly meticulous. It started one Summer where it was more of a game, trying to figure out where the trains would stop so I could have first access to the doors (both 2 and 4 car trains), observing how long it took for a new train to come after one had left and testing out the best spots within the cars for easy access and less hassle when entering/exiting.

It eventually evolved into me becoming a self appointed train expert. I mean I didn’t feel as if I owned them or anything, but I felt I had a clear advantage over the rest of the commuters, seeing as I had my all important “system”.

The Monday Morning Recap | Johnny’s Birthday

September 28th, 2009 by Adam Mark

cobbs

Last week looked more like a city morgue than a buzzing writing group. While most of us were dealing with the plague, Mateo was off traveling the world and enjoying the sun (he’ll tell you all about it later), Terence was on a much needed holiday and Steph was fighting off all the semi-quasi Jonas brothers looking for a lesson. As such, be on the lookout for things to get ramped up here as we have an exclusive DJ Z-Trip interview on the way along with new fashion columns and a food review or two.

This weekend brought many smiles upon Canadian faces as many a hockey pool started, but more importantly is was one of our closest friend’s birthday.

Do Your Part | Anti-HST Rally

September 17th, 2009 by Adam Mark

campbellmug

So I never intended to use this site as a political platform, but HST is something we all need to think about. By now most of you should be familiar with HST, but in case you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past few months the BC Liberals plan to introduce a 12 per cent Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) to replace the current PST (7 per cent) and GST (5 per cent) effective July 2010. Aside from the fact that the Liberals promised that a HST would not be implemented, their selling point is that this will be the lowest HST in Canada (NB, NL, and NS each have 13%) – when essentially, it’s raising the tax on everyday things such as haircuts, food, heating bills, movie and theatre tickets, magazine and newspapers, etc, etc.

The Liberals combat the bad wrap by stating that the HST cuts out all the hidden PST costs on items. For instance lumber is subject to 4 separate PST charges (logging, transport, sawmill, and retail costs) before it even hits you, where as with the proposed HST system it would only be charged the 12% HST on the final purchase. This is all fine and dandy… if you’re in the lumber business or any sort of large business in BC, but for the typical BC resident it just means that we’ll see a a jump of 7% on our daily transactions.

With all that in mind, I now pose the question, would you do something about this if you could? Well, now you can.
