Tiesto’s Kaleidoscope World Tour at Pacific Coliseum, Vancouver

November 17th, 2009 by Melissa Dex Guzman

Dutch DJ extraordinaire Tiesto played this past Saturday at the Pacific Coliseum and yours truly was there for the showdown. Down to the point, I don’t think I could have asked for more… I had fun? Initially, I thought it would be “funny” to go down to the show, but what it came down to was just “fun”. Joke’s always on me, right?

My relationship with electronic music can be traced back to when I was 10 years old watching documentaries on the Prodigy and the UK rave scene. I wanted to be a part of the dance scene so bad but not only was I 10 and well-underaged but the scene seemed to have only existed in Europe. Over a decade later, here I am in my twenties, still missing out on the rave scene… although according to some (re: most), that was a good thing.

Confession: Tiesto is my first “trance” show.

Not On The Guest List: Concert Review of Girl Talk at the Commodore Ballroom, Vancouver

I remember when Gregg Gillis first hit stage in Vancouver… Back then he was still living a double life as a biomedical engineer and a “laptop performer”. It was at Richards on Richards (RIP). The venue had oversold itself, the police had arrived and there were threats to shut the show down. Nonetheless, the show went on, the humid air was 40 degrees and it was a legendary party. Legendary.

Nearly three years later, Girl Talk arrives back in Vancouver and I realize that what they say is true: You can have too much of a good thing.

This week birthed the quickest Internet meme of all time with Kanye’s outburst at the 2009 MTV VMAs during Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech… but I’m sure you already knew that.

It’s cooling down in Vancouver but the sun’s still out for the weekend so let’s pretend summer’s still here for a little while. What’s happening this weekend?

Foursquare is now in Vancouver

September 10th, 2009 by Melissa Dex Guzman

Foursquare comes to Vancouver

Now I’m a little late on the ball with this one but Foursquare made its launch yesterday on 09/09/09 in Canada, with Vancouver as the first Canadian city to have the social media game. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Foursquare, it self-describes itself as “50% friend-finder, 30% social cityguide, 20% nightlife game” and for the most part, that’s exactly what it is.

Hello World versus the Hauxboist

September 1st, 2009 by Melissa Dex Guzman

Hello World

Today marks a few things in mind: Firstly, the official end of summer as this morning we said hello to our familiar pumpkin spice lattes at our local Starbucks (I can smell the sweetness of autumn already). Secondly, the launch of thecobbles.ca – (insert high fives here)… and lastly, today is the day that British Columbia officially holds the lowest minimum wage in Canada. (Not so awesome.)
