What a year for music! Dance music has made quite the impact in 2009 whether its David Guetta teaming up with Akon or the sweet sounds coming from France, Italy, San Francisco or even my home Vancouver! I put together a mostly 2009 style house + disco + nu disco + space disco whatever you want to call it style mix, I’ve been working on for the last while.

I’ll be handing out 100 free copies at Shine this Friday, where my friends and I will be celebrating my 25th birthday. If you’re in the Vancouver area shoot me an email and I’ll make sure you’re on the gues tlist. Otherwise, sit back, spark a joint, and enjoy the trip!

Lets celebrate bro

November 26th, 2009 by Mateo

When a friend of mine told me we would be celebrating his Birthday on top of a mountain, I thought instantly: log home, bear skin rug, and collecting fire wood. I was so wrong.

This weekend 20 of my friends and I, all of whom I have kept close since high school will be staying at the state of the art Crescendo Lodge on top of Big White, BC. We are bringing up 4 turntables, enough alcohol to start a riot, 3 boxes of boneless chicken, and some ridiculous Costco size veggie platters. I’m excited for a comfortable weekend in the cold. Its too often I go through winter freezing my ass of with nothing better to do than look forward to my next sunny getaway. I find myself drinking way too much eggnog which leads to some irritable bowels, so I end up staying home playing COD, way too embarrassed to have to deal with a public poop mishap. Anyways, this isn’t  livejournal so I’ll leave you with some photos of said destination rather than describe my stinky Winter issues.

Corporate Branding. (GOOD?)

November 24th, 2009 by Mateo

Everywhere I look Red Bull is sponsoring an event that works to promote music and culture. Educating people that previously may have never had the exposure to what they’re seeing or hearing, while at the same time creating a platform for artists to promote their work. I know deep down Red Bull like any other cola brand, is a marketing machine with its number one goal being to make the fat stacks, but the effort + dedication its team put into promoting stuff I enjoy is enough for me to lend my support.

Note: This was not written with a public health perspective. I do not condone drinking more than a few of cans of this stuff a week.

Shout ooot to Nina, I’ve discovered a few different artists through RBMA.

The Greatest Boy Alive?

November 6th, 2009 by Mateo

The Whitest Boy Alive is my favorite band. My love for them started when I heard a remix of one of their songs by one of my favorite French house producers, Fred Falke. After hearing this remix I went on a rampage trying to find out all I could about the band. Who are they? Where are they from? Where’s the buzz? Usually any artist Mr. Falke remixes has a huge cult following, but there was really nothing to be found on these dudes. Their website was, and still is pretty minimal, I couldn’t find any reviews of their album, and the only jam I could find was the previously mentioned remix. It was only a matter of time though until the Blogosphere would put Justice’s on the back burner and embrace a new sound.

Matéo – Timing is Everything (Fall 2009 mix)

October 28th, 2009 by Mateo

THECOBBLES

Its been about a month an a half since we released C’est Tres Bon and I can’t even begin to describe how thankful I am for the support. I think we’ve reached around 500 downloads and I’ve managed to give out about 300 hard copies. Thanks to the Mix + The party that accompanied it, I’ve managed to meet some great people that have shown me nothing but love. Special Thanks to Anthony Needle Kineval who has brought me in a few times to play at his Friday night, which coincidentally I always wanted to play since its days at Tokyo Lounge(RIP). If you’re in Vancouver and want a gangster free, dance like its nobody’s bidnezz kinda vibe, then look no further than Get Up Get Down Fridays @ Shine in Gastown.

This young gun is no newcomer to djing. '99 marked the year Matéo would acquire his first pair of turntables. It wouldn’t be long before he would be found sneaking into the Vancouver nightclubs, playing breaks with some of the most talented DJs Vancouver had to offer. As the years went on, he continued to play at numerous venues across Vancouver dropping everything from funk to dubstep. His secret? Playing what he likes! For Matéo, acknowledging that music doesn’t have to be the “latest and greatest” in order to have dance floor appeal is key. Inspired by those who did it first, Matéo continues to seamlessly blend genres from across the musical spectrum, educating and nourishing the dance floor at the same time. Matéo lends this musical knowledge to The Cobbles, writing about the complex relationship music shares with the world. The influence music has on the individual and society, and the influence individuals and society have on music. As an Anthropology student, Matéo finds music particularly interesting to relate to current global issues. Don’t get us wrong though, as someone who isn’t necessarily known for his seriousness, you’re bound to find some off topic humor in his ramblings. mateo@thecobbles.ca
